Myth:

Demeter is the goddess of the harvest. She was loved by all mankind, she had a beautiful daughter named Persephone. She loved to play and dance in the field of wild flowers. But one day when Persephone was about to pick wild flowers, the ground opened up, the hands of Hades reached out and grabbed Persephone and took her down to live with her. Hearing the cry of her daughter, Persephone, Demeter ran to the meadow searching for her. When she could not, Demeter searched night and day restlessly. Feeling betrayed by who ever took her daughter, she swore that the Earth would remain barren until her daughter was returned to her. Finally, Zeus gave in to Hermes to command Hades to release Persephone. As Persephone was leaving, Hades offered her a pomegranate, Persephone refused to eat any food from Hades. Now that she is leaving she accepted the pomegranate seeds. Persephone returned to Mt. Olympus, but Demeter was unhappy because Persephone ate the pomegranate seeds. She now knows that Persephone will have to return to the Underworld with Hades for part of the year. Demeter was upset that Persephone has to return to the Underworld. While Persephone was in the Underworld, Demeter was upset, so during this time period we have winter and fall. The time when Demeter was her daughter, we have summer and spring.
